Retargeting Strategies for Beauty Brands on Shopify
Retargeting Strategies for Beauty Brands on Shopify
She visited your product page. She read the reviews. She looked at the ingredient list. She left.
Now what?
Most beauty brands answer this question the same way: retarget her with a discount. "Still thinking about that serum? Here's 15% off." A popup follows her across Instagram. A Klaviyo email hits her inbox the next morning. The message is always some variation of "we noticed you were looking, and here's a bribe to come back."
It works. Sort of. Discount retargeting converts at 2-4% in beauty. But it converts the wrong way. You just taught this customer that browsing without buying earns her a discount. She'll do it again.
There's a better hook for retargeting. Instead of "Still thinking about that serum? Here's 15% off," try: "Still thinking about that serum? Try it for free."
Why Standard Retargeting Underperforms in Beauty
Retargeting exists because most website visitors don't buy on their first visit. In beauty ecommerce, the purchase consideration window is longer than in most categories. A customer researching a $65 serum might visit the product page two, four, even six times before buying. She's comparing ingredients, reading reviews on Reddit, watching YouTube videos, asking friends.
She's not price shopping. She's confidence shopping.
This distinction matters enormously for retargeting strategy. When a brand retargets with a discount, it assumes the barrier is price. "She didn't buy because it costs too much, so let's make it cost less."
