Shopify Plus Checkout Customizations That Actually Move Conversion Rates

Standard Shopify checkout is good. It converts well. It's trusted. And for most stores under $2M in revenue, it's fine to leave alone.

But at a certain scale, "fine" starts costing real money. A 0.3% improvement in checkout conversion at $10M in annual revenue is $30,000. At $50M, it's $150,000. That's why Shopify Plus exists, and that's specifically why checkout extensibility matters.

This isn't a list of every possible checkout tweak. It's the customizations that actually change behavior at checkout, based on what Shopify Plus beauty, wellness, and supplement brands are doing right now.

What Standard Shopify Checkout Can't Do

On standard Shopify plans, your checkout is locked. You get the default fields, the default layout, the default post-purchase flow. You can change your logo and brand colors. That's about it.

You cannot add trust badges next to the payment button. You cannot show estimated delivery dates. You cannot offer a post-purchase upsell. You cannot run a try-before-you-buy program through checkout. You cannot add loyalty point redemption, gift messaging, or subscription management at the point of sale.

Shopify made this decision deliberately. A locked checkout means fewer broken checkouts across millions of stores. But for brands doing serious volume, those missing pieces compound into significant lost revenue.

Shopify Plus uses checkout extensibility through Checkout UI Extensions and the Checkout Editor. These are API-based tools that let you add custom elements to every step of checkout without modifying the underlying Shopify infrastructure. Your checkout stays stable. But now you can build on top of it.

1. Post-Purchase Upsells

This is the highest-ROI checkout customization for most Plus merchants. Period.

After a customer completes payment but before she sees the order confirmation, you show a one-click upsell offer. The customer's payment info is already on file. She doesn't re-enter anything. One tap, and the upsell item is added to the order.

Why it works for beauty and wellness: your customer just bought a vitamin C serum. She's in buying mode. You show her the matching eye cream at 15% off. Or a travel-size version of the cleanser she browsed but didn't add. Acceptance rates on well-targeted post-purchase offers range from 5-15%. On a $60 AOV, that's $3-9 per order in additional revenue with zero additional acquisition cost.

Apps that do this well: ReConvert, AfterSell, CartHook. All require Shopify Plus.
